Listening to Connect

by John Keyser

I am reading one of John Maxwell’s books, Everyone Communicates, Few Connect.

This is so true and so important to note.

Business is about relationships. It is imperative that we connect with people—both our external and internal clients, that is, our team members. We must slow down, take the time to connect with our team members and other co-workers. This means starting conversations, consciously listening with a quiet mind and without an agenda, and offering space for understanding, open mindedness and growth.

People flourish when they feel affirmed and connected, and it is our responsibility as a leader to help others learn, grow and succeed.

Maxwell insightfully observes that “people may hear our words, but they feel our attitude.”

This week, my invitation to you (and to me) is to 1) realize the importance of conscious listening, 2) make time to genuinely connect with the people with whom we work, and 3) reflect afterwards about the gift we gave ourselves and others when we offered our mindful attention with a genuine desire to learn, understand and appreciate.

We’ll be a better leader and teammate.
