Leadership Comes from Our Influence, Character and Attitude
I discussed in my last post how leadership comes from our influence. I received appreciative feedback from a number of people. I wish to highlight one in particular: Sameer Somal, the CFO of Blue Ocean Global Wealth, an innovative wealth management advisory firm. Sameer writes below about his insights on highly effective leaders.

There is a critical difference between leadership and management. Managers direct, and leaders inspire. Managers rely on control, and leaders seek to empower and inspire trust.
Leaders invest their time effectively to maximize opportunities to help others grow. They set clear expectations, define roles and support their team members through their successes and their failures. Leaders motivate and inspire their team members, which generates enthusiasm, full engagement and pride in their work and their company. It also leads to increased loyalty. (We must realize that unwanted turnover is hugely expensive.)
Leadership capital—character, humility, integrity—and an attitude of “my satisfaction and success comes from the satisfaction and success of my team members” is precious. It can be the difference between consistent and inconsistent outstanding results. In fact, Wharton School of Finance researchers conclude that the character and leadership of their C-level executives directly determines between 15 and 25 percent of the variation in corporate profitability, on average.
We must remember, leadership comes from our influence, not title, and our influence is grounded by our character and attitude.
